Zac Efron building a ‘FutureCave’ made of eco-friendly materials

In 2020, the actor bought a 128-hectare spread of bushland in New South Wales, Australia. And now, he’s building an off-the-grid home on it that’s made almost entirely of hemp. The cost, according to the Daily Mail, will be around $2.65 million.

Efron, 38, hired designer Joost Bakker and architect Frank Burride for the project. Bakker previously said on Instagram that they’ll use sustainable, eco-friendly materials such as hemp blocks, recycled oyster shells, agricultural waste, and sustainable particle boards, which will become internal bricks. The two-story “FutureCave”, as it’s known, will be located around an hour outside of Byron Bay.

It’ll have six “bedroom pods” that are connected by an outdoor walkway, reports People, and each pod will have its own bathroom and rooftop garden. A living area will provide opportunities for gathering and relaxing. Once completed, the home will be “anti-mould” and “naturally fire resistant” with high-quality clean air throughout.

The hemp that’ll be used for the construction, as well as soft furnishings such as curtains and pillows, will come from a farm in southern New South Wales. Efron opened up to the Australian Financial Review about the project in December 2025. “I live a pretty fast-paced life and work quite a bit, so in between movies and press tours, my number one goal is always to take time for myself and rest and recharge and to be in nature as much as possible, and as close to the earth as I can, and this land just feels like it’s perfect for that,” he said.

In May 2021, Efron sold his home in the Los Feliz neighbourhood of Los Angeles for $5.3 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That same year, he won a Daytime Emmy Award for hosting the Netflix eco-travel show Down to Earth with Zac Efron.
