The incident unfolded Saturday night just before 9:30 p.m. in the southeast community of Abbeydale. Police were responding to reports of a residential break-in at a home in the 0 to 100 block of Abbercove Road S.E. Police say the suspect had fled before they arrived, but officers were able to locate him.
During the attempted arrest, police said in a news release "the man became combative and did not comply with police directions," and at least one officer deployed a conductive weapon. After that, police say the man went into medical distress. He was then taken to hospital, where he died.
Police say no one else was hurt in the interaction. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) will now investigate the incident, as the do for all deaths in police custody.
