Vancouver's Granville Street sewer replacement project reaches completion

The segment of Granville Street running through Vancouver’s Marpole neighbourhood has faced significant traffic disruptions over the past year due to a major sewer upgrade project. The City of Vancouver announced today that the $20-million project has now been completed. The work focused on the segment of Granville Street between West 59th Avenue and West 62nd Avenue. The project involved renewing and separating 700 metres of combined sewer pipes into dedicated stormwater and sanitary sewer systems. The upgrades will increase the sewer system’s capacity to accommodate heavy rainfall and long-term population growth stemming from new development in the area. The City has a long-term goal of separating combined sewer systems across Vancouver to increase capacity and reduce their environmental impact. “We’re investing in neighbourhoods across the city,” said Mayor Ken Sim in a statement. “Delivering core infrastructure while creating a more vibrant and resilient Marpole supports local businesses and improves quality of life for residents every day.” The restoration work also included the renewal of 600 metres of sidewalk, along with improvements to curbs, gutters, tree pits, and road surfaces. Construction on the project began in Fall 2025. Earlier in 2026, a segment of Granville Street in the area was reduced to one lane in each direction to accommodate a major phase of the work.
