The alpine meadows in Kamloops and the Okanagan are bursting with blooming wild flowers this summer as part of a spectacular annual phenomena that doesn’t last long. Alpine plants are some of the hardiest in the region, able to withstand low temperatures in dry, thin soils before bursting into a kaleidoscope of colours. Fortunately, local skill hills make accessing the meadows easy during the year, offering daily hiking passes and chairlifts up to the heads of trail networks.
From mid-June to early September, visitors to Sun Peaks Ski Resort near Kamloops can take the Sunburst Express chairlift to access 22 trails of varying length and intensity mid-way up the mountain. Ambitious hikers can summit Tod Peak and visit Tod Lake. Daily hiking passes are available for $32 per adult during this period with cheaper twilight lifts running between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Kelowna’s Big White Ski Resort’s hiking trails through alpine meadows are open from July 1 to Sept. 7.
Visitors access numerous trail heads by riding up on the Bullet Chair that offers cool breezes and panoramic views. One trail leads to a little lake called Rhonda Lake. Scenic Chairlift Tickets cost roughly $15 for a single lift and $25 for unlimited daily lifts, and children are free.
Wildflower season in the alpine meadows at Silver Star Mountain Resort near Vernon runs from mid-July to early September. Visitors can get unlimited lift access on the Summit Express Gondola and Comet Lift to take advantage of the breathtaking views and access hiking trails all summer season. A Sightseeing and Hiking Pass costs a single adult $59.
Other ski hills offering lifts to alpine meadows during the summer are Revelstoke Mountain Resort and Whistler Blackcomb. Apex Mountain Resort in the South Okanagan is closed for the season. News from © iNFOnews.ca, .
